Maundy Thursday: the Last Supper
Maundy Thursday: for Christianity, this day marks the beginning of the so-called Paschal Triduum, the period of three days leading to Easter and thus recalling the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
This illumination portrays the Last Supper of Jesus and the Apostles, the main event to which Maundy Thursday is dedicated. We access the scene from a marble Renaissance-style arch: among the Apostles we can clearly recognize Saint John the Evangelist, here depicted laying his head on the table - a reference to a passage in the Gospels where John is described as "leaning on Jesus' bosom."
"The Last Supper", illumination from the "Gualenghi-d'Este Hours", ms. Ludwig IX 13 (83.ML.109), f. 162v, 1469 circa, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
