CHARLEMAGNE, KING OF THE FRANKS
December 4, 771 AD: Charlemagne's younger brother and king of Austrasia, Carloman I, perishes from a sudden illness after just a little more than two years spent on the throne. At the time of his death, Carloman and his brother were close to outright war; his sudden passing thus allows Charlemagne to inherit his land and reunite all of the Frankish Kingdom without any bloodshed, reason why Carloman's death is regarded by many historians as a stepping stone to the Holy Roman Empire.
