Dance of Death
We finally reached the end of October... and that means it's Halloween! Last year we celebrated the occasion by introducing you to a very peculiar manuscript, the ms. Français 995 from the Bibliothéque nationale de France. Why not do the same this year and explore the theme of the Dance of Death with yet another beautiful book from the same library? Here are some of the most stunning illuminations from another "Dance Macabre": this, however, is a printed book. Antoine Vérard, who published volume around 1491-1492, was the turning point between illuminated manuscripts and modern printed editions in France.
The volume has been digitized in its entirety and is now available online on the BnF website; here are our favorite illuminations, but we strongly recommend you visit the link to admire them all!
