SAINT CECILIA
"Saint Cecilia playing the portative organ", illumination from a French collection of prayers, ms. 1206, f. 112r, beginning of the 16th century, Bibliothèque municipale, Valenciennes.
November 22 is celebrated by the Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox Churches as the feast day of Saint Cecilia. Being one of the early virgin martyrs of Rome, Cecilia has been revered since the early days of Christianity and sits among the only seven women to be commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. The Saint has long been considered the patroness of all musicians and singers and is frequently depicted playing a viola, a portative organ, or other musical instruments.
