Saint Valentine's Day is a religious holiday nowadays celebrated in many countries in the world; it's recognized as the celebration of love and affection. Saint Valentine was a Roman priest, born in Terni around 176 A.D. At the age of 21, he was consecrated Bishop of Interamna (Terni) after his conversion to Christianity. During the persecutions against Christians, he was arrested twice and killed near Rome at the age of 97. There are many legends that explain how his name is linked to this holiday. One is about the affection Valentine felt for his jailer's daughter to whom he restored the sight; before his death, he gave her a letter signed "...Your Valentine". Another one is about the marriage between the Christian Serapia and the pagan centurion Sabino: they were in love, but the union was thwarted by their families; despite their parents' resistance, Valentine celebrated a secret wedding. Serapia was seriously ill: the newlyweds fell asleep for eternity right after the wedding ceremony, a miracle that eternalised their love. The truth is far from legends: it seems that Pope Gelasius I made the pagan feast of fertility named "Lupercalia", celebrated on 15 February, coincide with the previous day, dedicated to Valentine.   "Valentine", illumination from the manuscript "Queen Mary's Psalter", ms. San Valentino era un prete romano, nato a Terni circa nel 176 d.C. A soli 21 anni, venne consacrato vescovo di Interamna (Terni) dopo la sua conversione al cattolicesimo. A seguito delle persecuzioni cristiane, venne incarcerato due volte ed assassinato fuori Roma all'età di 97 anni. Ci sono varie versioni della leggenda che spiegano come la festività sia legata al suo nome. Una racconta di come il vescovo, imprigionato per volere dell'imperatore, avesse ridato la vista alla figlia del suo carceriere; poco prima della sua esecuzione si sarebbe rivolto alla giovane, cui era molto affezionato, concludendo la lettera con "...dal tuo Valentino". Un'altra parla di come il Santo abbia celebrato il matrimonio fra la cristiana Serapia e il centurione Sabino: i due erano molto innamorati, ma la loro unione era ostacolata dalle rispettive famiglie. Nonostante le resistenze, Valentino celebrò il matrimonio in segreto; Serapia era gravemente malata e i due giovani, subito dopo la cerimonia, caddero in un sonno eterno, che eternò anche il loro amore. La verità si discosta molto dalle leggende: pare che Papa Gelasio I avesse fatto coincidere i "Lupercalia", la festa pagana della fertilità che si celebrava il 15 Febbraio, con la festa del giorno prima, che era dedicato al Santo.   "Valentino", miniatura tratta dal manoscritto "Salterio della Regina Maria", ms.
